Wenger: Best Way To Answer Critics Is On The Pitch

Two Samir Nasri goals, one on either side of the half-time break, ensured that Arsenal emerged triumphant despite a late charge led by substitute Rafael da Silva.

The Brazilian full back replaced Gary Neville and was assured at the back, and confident at the top, but the Gunners held on for the win while the visitors squandered multiple chances by sending the ball the wrong side of the post.

Speaking to Sky Sports, captain William Gallas said it was important to return to winning ways: "It was very important to win against Manchester United because we want to stay in the race.

"The last few games we draw... we lost... so it is important to win at home."

Fabregas added that their performance highlighted their character: "It has been a frustrating past few results so it was vital to win and get back on track and show our character.

"Its great to see and hear the fans enjoying themselves and sing," the Spaniard said.

"We are the same... just because we beat Man U we are not better than we were last week. Football changes so quickly. We just need to be focussed now for the next game.

"In your head you realise you can't do the same mistake against Tottenham and I think we have learned."

Arsene Wenger echoed his player's sentiments, and claims anything other than a win would have been a disappointment.

"We had to win," the French manager said. "But it was a great football game overall, both teams were going for it.

"They didn't take the chances they created, but we did [and that is what counts].

"I knew today it was a big game for the future of the team, not the club. To keep in the race and win big games is vital for a young team," Wenger concluded.
