Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has given Emmanuel Eboue his backing after the Gunner had to be substituted in yesterday’s victory over Wigan Athletic.
The Ivorian only came on as a substitute for Samir Nasri after half an hour at the Emirates, but after an error-prone display was hauled off by Wenger in the final minutes.
His substitution prompted the Emirates crowd to jeer the player off the pitch, a reaction which dismayed Wenger.
Speaking to the press after the game he said: “The crowd was very hard on him. I felt he had completely lost confidence, and when you can't keep the ball any more then you become a danger.”
Wenger, as reported by football365.com, also admitted that he was disappointed for the player but that he had no option but to take him off.
The Frenchman revealed, “I just didn't want the 90 minutes' work to go to waste. The fans contributed. He's a sensitive boy who wants to do well and he cares about the club. It was very sad but the important thing was that we won the game.”
The low point of the afternoon for Eboue came when he took the ball off team mate Kolo Toure and passed it straight to the opposition.
A clearly distraught Eboue then left the field and was consoled by Emmanuel Adebayor, amongst others, on his way to the dugout.
Yet his disastrous display appears not to have affected his standing in his manager’s eyes and Wenger tipped him to bounce back well. He said: “I think he will come back and show how good a player he is.”
The Arsenal boss also appears confident that the Emirates crowd will forgive Eboue, claiming: “The same fans will applaud him when he does well.”
